About The Corner

The notorious corner of West Fayette and Monroe Streets in Baltimore is a 24-hour open-air drug market that provides the economic fuel for a dying neighbourhood. Through the eyes of one broken family – two drug-addicted adults and their smart, vulnerable 15-year-old son, DeAndre McCullough – Simon and Burns examine the harsh reality of the drug culture and the poignant scenes of hope, caring and love that astonishingly rise in the midst of a place America has abandoned.

David Simon’s Homicide (also available as an Enhanced Edition) won an Edgar Award and became the basis for the NBC award-winning drama of the same name. The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighbourhood was made into an HBO mini-series. Simon is the executive producer and writer for HBO’s Peabody Award-winning series The Wire. He lives in Baltimore.

Ed Burns was a teacher in the Baltimore public school system. Before that he served twenty years in the city police department. For much of that time he worked as a detective in the homicide unit.

Praise for The Corner

The Corner is an intimate, intense dispatch from the broken heart of urban America. It is impossible to read these pages and not feel stunned at the high price, in human potential, in thwarted aspirations, that simple survival on the streets of West Baltimore demands of its citizens. An important document, as devastating as it is lucid.’
Richard Price, author of Clockers

‘[A] dense, mind-blowing 600-page doorstop… less a book, more a way of life. … The characters in this story are real without trying… you’ll find yourself struck by the sheer poetry of the prose.’
The Times

‘An amazingly clear-eyed, yet sympathetic portrait of the American underclass.’
Daily Telegraph

‘A powerful work… [filled with] many illuminating passages where first-hand reportage gives way to concise contextualizing… [The Corner] is beautifully written, by turns evocative and simmeringly angry.’
Observer

‘Brave, unblinkered, and heartbreaking look at the residents of a few blocks of West Baltimore’s ghetto… So far above most reporting on the underclass as to demand attention.’
New York Times Book Review
